Linux VPS for websites and WordPress

Moving a site off shared hosting gives you your own CPU and memory, root access and the freedom to tune your web stack. This guide explains what actually matters when choosing a VPS for a website, so you buy enough capacity without overpaying.

What uses the resources

A typical WordPress site runs a web server (Nginx or Apache), PHP-FPM and a MySQL/MariaDB database on the same machine. The database and PHP workers are what consume memory. A small brochure site or blog can run on 1 GB of RAM with careful tuning; a WooCommerce shop, several sites on one server or a control panel benefits from 2 GB or more.

Disk space and backups

The WordPress core is small — most of the disk goes to media uploads, database growth, logs and local backups. Plan for at least double your current site size so you have room for updates and backup archives, and keep one copy of every backup off the server.

Traffic allowance

Monthly traffic is the total data your server sends. A page of 2 MB viewed 100,000 times is roughly 200 GB. Using a CDN or caching plugin reduces both traffic and server load.

Recommended setup checklist

Use a current LTS distribution (e.g. Ubuntu LTS or Debian stable), enable automatic security updates, put a firewall in front of SSH, install a free Let's Encrypt certificate, and enable page caching. These steps matter more for speed and safety than raw specs.

Frequently asked questions

Is 512 MB RAM enough for WordPress?

It can host a static site or a very light single WordPress install, but it leaves little room for the database and PHP. 1 GB is a more comfortable starting point, 2 GB if you run a shop or several sites.

Do I need a control panel?

No. Many sites run fine managed over SSH. Panels are convenient but use extra RAM, so size up one plan if you plan to install one.

Can I upgrade later?

Choose the plan that fits today and upgrade when monitoring shows sustained high memory or CPU use. Check upgrade options with VPSFaster support.
