VPS for development, Docker and staging
A Linux VPS with full root access is a flexible home for containers, a staging copy of your app, a Git service, or a self-hosted CI runner. The key is giving containers enough memory and disk for images.
Get a personalised recommendationMemory for containers
Docker itself is light, but each container adds its own runtime. A small stack (app + database + reverse proxy) runs comfortably on 2 GB; build steps, multiple services or a self-hosted runner are smoother on 4 GB. Adding a swap file helps absorb short spikes.
Disk for images and volumes
Container images, build caches and volumes grow quickly. Plan for 40 GB or more and prune unused images regularly with docker system prune.
A sensible baseline
Disable password SSH login in favour of keys, enable a firewall that only exposes ports 22, 80 and 443, put services behind a reverse proxy such as Caddy or Traefik for automatic HTTPS, and keep secrets out of your repositories.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run Kubernetes?
Lightweight distributions such as k3s can run on a single VPS with 4 GB RAM or more. Full multi-node clusters need several servers.
Is 1 vCPU enough for builds?
It works for small projects but builds will be slower. Choose a plan with more vCPUs if you compile often.
Which Linux distribution?
Ubuntu LTS and Debian are the most widely documented for Docker. Choose the one you are most comfortable maintaining.
